WHAT
After learning elements of a formal letter and business writing conventions, compose a letter to a well defined audience to raise awareness or inform them about a not-so-well-known or neglected (เรื่องที่โดนมองข้าม) problem in your community. The goal is not to attack or complain but to help your audience become aware of the issue, in hopes that they will take action to resolve it. Your letter should be between 2,000 to 2,300 words.
WHY
This assignment teaches you how to write a formal business letter that reflects professional conventions and practice how to convey “bad news” in a strategic manner. That is, you will learn professional writing practices and develop diplomacy. Letter-writing is an essential skill in the workplace and civic participation. When you apply for a job, you may need to write a cover letter to introduce your application. Equally important is your ability to deliver negative information in a way that will lead to a positive outcome, rather than anger.
HOW
- Make a list of different divisions in your community: city, school, work, neighborhood. Under each division, divide it into smaller categories. For example, school –> faculty –> BAS; school –> cafeteria; neighborhood –> soi
- Under each smaller category, make a list of 10 problems that may have been neglected or not be so well known.
- Evaluate if some of the problems are interconnected. Should they be combined into related categories or headings?
- Rank your topics by decided which ones are most problematic, and which ones make you most worried?
- Visit the site to document and capture the problem using a camera.
- Explain the problem, using descriptive writing technique you learned in class.
- Develop a list of audience for the letter. Who should be aware of this problem, and what are their characteristics and demographics? Be detailed.
- Pinpoint your specific audience and compose a professional letter.
