Topics: Super quiz, how to manage difficult texts with SQ3R and 10/5 methods, reading US Congressional report
Read:
- Flemming’s “Introducing SQ3R: Survey, Question, Read, Recall, Review”
- “The Altruistic Personality” (apply SQ3R to reading this article)
Submit: Show evidence you applied every component of SQ3R to “The Altruistic Personality.” Take pictures and submit to Google Drive here for section 1 and here for section 2. There are many options on how to do each technique of SQ3R. For instance, under R3, the reading provides 3 different techniques. You can choose what you like best. However, you must do one technique for every SQ3R component. (Bookmark the drive so you know where to submit assignments the rest of the semester.)

Topics: Using reading to begin writing, deepening levels of thinking
Read:
- Tugend’s “Multitasking Can Make You Lose … Um … Focus”
- Weekly outside reading article
Submit:
- Evidence of your use of SQ3R and annotations on Tugend’s article and your weekly outside reading journal. Take pictures and upload to Google Drive.
- Complete weekly outside reading response journal.

Read: Schneier’s Data and Goliath: The Hidden Battles to Collect Your Data and Control Your World, Chapter 1, pp. 15-22 and Chapter 2 pp. 23-38 (Apply SQ3R)

- Revised written response from Thursday in-class writing assignment. Be sure to follow advice from the article “What Is the Difference Between Revising and Editing?”
- SQ3R on Kerwood’s blog
To Do: Bring a women’s or men’s magazine to class. It has to be geared toward a particular sex, so don’t choose at title for general audience like Time or National Geographic. Choose something like Maxim or Cosmo.
WEEK 5
Tues. 9/10
Make up class 8:15-9:30
Topics: Topic development, refining and answering level 3 questions for your essay
Submit:
- Invention for project 1 essay
- Explain: Based on class discussion about magazine as conduct book in the 21st century from the previous class, explain: What is a magazine? Your answer should reflect level 3 multidimensional thinking. Write at least 250-300 words.

Bring your findings to class. Everything. Notes, interview scripts, etc.
Topic: Data analysis heuristics
Submit: A 1.5-2 page paper that explains all major findings from your field work (interviews, observations). Submit 1 per group.
Thurs. 11/7
Topics: Writing the conclusion of your report, data analysis cont.
Read: Sample recommendation report (again)
Submit: As a group, individually code 2 sources (just 2 for now). Then compare your code to all group members’. Calculate the reliability percentage. Revise your codes, and then bring the codes to class.

Submit: 50% draft of your report.
